Boy Group | Brain Power | Wk 1
We kicked off our first session of Brain Power with introducing the Boys to the purpose and expectations of the group and having them share the “highs and lows” of their previous week.
I read Harold and the Purple Crayon to the Boys as a way to introduce them to some of the major themes for the six week series: decision making, creativity, emotions and strategic thinking. The Boys thought Harold was very cool and wanted his magic purple crayon. ☺
We then talked about their daily homework assignment – documenting their “acts of awesomeness.” Daily they are to document in their notebook their "acts of awesomeness." Acts of Awesomeness are things that are hard, but we do them anyway, such as waking up each morning, the time I wanted to yell however I didn't. Think of it as acts of kindness, bravery, or performing a favor. Daily the Boys are to document these acts in their journal and bring their journal to each session. We will then cash in their acts for a rubber band that will be used to expand and create their rubberband ball. This ball will be an example of their brain and how the habits we create in our mind and actions can create and strengthen neuropathways in our brains.
We discussed how the brain controls all we do and the “struggle” between our reasoning mind and our emotions. About how we often respond and react because of our emotions, but how we can practice and actively train our mind to think and reflect before we act.
I'm really looking forward to our next Sunday session on 12/2. (Be sure make a note on your calendar that we won't be meeting again until that time!) As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions or comments. We are here for you and your Boys.
In addition, please be sure to check out the upcoming Boy/Girl & Parent workshops all about Consent Training that will be held on December 2. Details below!
Enjoy the Thanksgiving break. So grateful for the opportunity to get to know your families.
Warmly, Mike
